Speciality: Obstetrics & Gynaecology (OB-GYN)
Description:
Silent feto-maternal haemorrhage, or FMH, is a rare but important condition where fetal blood passes into the mother’s circulation without noticeable symptoms. Unlike acute FMH, where there may be clear signs like decreased fetal movements or distress, silent FMH often goes undetected until after delivery, sometimes only identified through laboratory tests. This can lead to unexpected anaemia in the newborn, which may require urgent treatment. Understanding FMH helps clinicians remain vigilant, especially when unexplained newborn anaemia occurs. Early detection and management are crucial, as prompt intervention can make a significant difference in outcomes for both mother and baby. Awareness of silent FMH supports better care and healthier beginnings.
