Description:

Welcome to today’s episode, where we explore silent feto-maternal haemorrhage, or FMH. This condition occurs when foetal blood passes into the mother’s circulation, often without obvious symptoms. While small amounts can be common and harmless, larger haemorrhages may lead to foetal anaemia or distress. Because FMH can be silent, it’s sometimes only detected when unexpected foetal complications arise, such as reduced movements or unexplained anaemia in the newborn. Diagnosis often relies on specific blood tests, like the Kleihauer-Betke test, which can estimate the volume of blood transferred. Prompt recognition and appropriate management are essential to improve outcomes for both mother and baby. Awareness among healthcare professionals and expectant mothers is key to early detection and intervention.
