Description:

Welcome to our podcast. Today, we’re exploring Silent Feto-Maternal Haemorrhage, or FMH. This condition occurs when fetal blood cells cross into the mother’s bloodstream, often without obvious symptoms. Unlike dramatic events such as trauma, silent FMH can happen gradually and go unnoticed. It can lead to fetal anaemia and, in severe cases, even stillbirth if not detected. Diagnosis relies on blood tests like the Kleihauer-Betke test, which helps estimate the amount of fetal blood in the mother’s circulation. Awareness is crucial, especially if there are signs like decreased fetal movements. Early recognition and treatment, such as intrauterine transfusion, can significantly improve outcomes for both mother and baby.
