Description:

Silent feto-maternal haemorrhage, or FMH, is a condition where fetal blood passes into the mother's circulation without obvious symptoms. Unlike acute FMH, which may present with warning signs, silent FMH often goes unnoticed until complications arise, such as reduced fetal movements or unexplained anaemia in the newborn. It can occur during pregnancy or delivery, but the exact cause is not always clear. Diagnosis relies on tests like the Kleihauer-Betke test, which detects fetal red cells in maternal blood. Early detection is crucial, as prompt treatment can improve outcomes for both mother and baby. Increased awareness of silent FMH can help healthcare professionals recognise and manage this rare but important condition.
