Speciality: Obstetrics & Gynaecology (OB-GYN)
Description:
Silent feto-maternal haemorrhage, or FMH, is a rare but important condition where fetal blood passes into the mother’s circulation without obvious symptoms. Unlike acute FMH, which may present with reduced fetal movements or distress, silent FMH is often only detected through blood tests after delivery or due to unexplained anaemia in the newborn. Although the mother typically shows no signs, it can lead to serious complications for the baby, such as anaemia or even stillbirth if not recognised. Awareness and timely detection are key. Routine screening isn’t standard, but a high index of suspicion is important in cases of unexplained neonatal anaemia. Understanding FMH helps ensure the best outcomes for both mother and baby.
