Description:

Welcome to today’s episode, where we shed light on silent feto-maternal haemorrhage, or FMH. This is a condition where foetal blood passes into the mother’s circulation, often without any obvious signs or symptoms. While small amounts of FMH are common and usually harmless, larger volumes can cause serious problems for the baby, such as anaemia or even stillbirth. Silent FMH can be difficult to detect because the mother may feel perfectly well. Healthcare professionals use specific blood tests, like the Kleihauer-Betke test, to diagnose FMH if there is concern. Early detection and prompt treatment, such as intrauterine transfusion or early delivery, can significantly improve outcomes for affected babies. Awareness of silent FMH is key to protecting both mother and child.
