Description:

Welcome to our podcast. Today, we’re exploring silent feto-maternal haemorrhage, or FMH—a condition where fetal blood passes into the mother’s circulation, often without obvious symptoms. While small amounts of FMH can occur normally during pregnancy, significant silent FMH can put the baby at risk of anaemia and other complications. Because there may be no warning signs, FMH is often detected only after birth, especially if the newborn shows signs of anaemia or distress. Diagnosis typically involves specialised blood tests, such as the Kleihauer-Betke test. Awareness of silent FMH is crucial for timely diagnosis and management, helping to improve outcomes for both mother and baby.
