Description:

Silent feto-maternal haemorrhage, or FMH, is a condition where foetal blood crosses into the mother's circulation without obvious symptoms. Unlike acute haemorrhages, silent FMH often occurs gradually and can go unnoticed until signs of foetal anaemia or distress appear. It’s most commonly detected when a routine ultrasound reveals abnormal foetal movements or reduced growth. Diagnosis relies on blood tests, such as the Kleihauer-Betke test, to measure foetal red cells in maternal blood. Early detection is crucial, as untreated FMH can lead to serious complications for the baby. Awareness among healthcare providers is essential for timely intervention and improved outcomes.
