Silent Feto-Maternal Haemorrhage (FMH)

Speciality: Obstetrics & Gynaecology (OB-GYN)

Speaker:

Mr. Dilip Kumar Sahu | Obstetrician

Description:

In today’s episode, we explore silent feto-maternal haemorrhage, or FMH—a rare but important condition in pregnancy. FMH occurs when fetal blood cells cross into the mother’s bloodstream, often without any obvious symptoms. Because it’s usually silent, FMH can go unnoticed until signs appear, such as decreased fetal movements. Diagnosis relies on blood tests, like the Kleihauer-Betke test, which detect fetal cells in maternal blood. Timely recognition is crucial, as unmanaged FMH can lead to fetal anaemia or distress. While the condition is uncommon, awareness helps clinicians intervene early and improve outcomes for both mother and baby. Stay tuned for more insights on maternal and fetal health.
