Speciality: Obstetrics & Gynaecology (OB-GYN)
Description:
Postpartum haemorrhage, or PPH, remains one of the leading causes of maternal mortality worldwide. Traditionally, oxytocin has been the standard drug used to prevent excessive bleeding after childbirth. However, carbetocin is emerging as a promising alternative. Unlike oxytocin, carbetocin is heat-stable and requires only a single injection, making it particularly valuable in low-resource settings. Recent studies have shown that carbetocin is just as effective as oxytocin in preventing PPH, but with the added benefits of easier storage and administration. As we continue to seek better outcomes for mothers, carbetocin represents an exciting shift in the prevention of postpartum haemorrhage.
