Description:

Silent feto-maternal haemorrhage, or FMH, is a condition where fetal blood passes into the mother’s circulation without any obvious symptoms. Unlike cases with trauma or bleeding, silent FMH often goes unnoticed until after delivery, when the baby may show signs of anaemia or distress. Diagnosis can be challenging, typically requiring specialised blood tests, such as the Kleihauer-Betke test, to detect fetal cells in the mother’s blood. Early recognition is important, as significant blood loss can lead to complications for the baby. By understanding FMH, healthcare professionals can monitor at-risk pregnancies more closely and respond quickly to any concerns, ultimately improving outcomes for both mother and child.
