Silent Feto-Maternal Haemorrhage (FMH)

Speciality: Obstetrics & Gynaecology (OB-GYN)

Description:

In today’s episode, we’re exploring silent feto-maternal haemorrhage, or FMH—a rare but important condition in pregnancy. FMH occurs when fetal blood cells cross the placenta into the mother’s circulation. Unlike acute FMH, the silent type often goes unnoticed, as there are usually no clear symptoms. This can make diagnosis challenging, often relying on routine checks or unexpected findings such as unexplained fetal anaemia or decreased fetal movements. Early detection is crucial because significant silent FMH can lead to serious complications for the baby, including anaemia or even stillbirth. Regular monitoring and awareness of this condition can help ensure timely intervention and better outcomes for both mother and baby.
