Speciality: Obstetrics & Gynaecology (OB-GYN)
Description:
Welcome to today’s episode, where we explore carbetocin and its transformative role in preventing postpartum haemorrhage, or PPH. Traditionally, oxytocin has been the mainstay for managing PPH, but carbetocin offers a new paradigm. Unlike oxytocin, carbetocin is a long-acting analogue, providing sustained uterine contraction with a single dose. This reduces the risk of PPH, especially in settings where consistent cold-chain storage for oxytocin is a challenge. Clinical trials have shown carbetocin to be just as effective, with a favourable safety profile. As we move towards safer childbirth worldwide, carbetocin could prove pivotal in reducing maternal morbidity and mortality, especially in resource-limited settings. Thanks for listening to our concise overview of this promising development.
