According to a study, pathogenic bacteria infect the gut by using a sugar found in the intestinal mucus layer.

In a recent study, scientists from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and BC Children's Hospital discovered that sialic acid, a sugar that is a component of the barrier-forming intestinal mucus layer, feeds the pathogenic bacteria that cause disease.
