Age-Associated Changes in Corneal Biomechanical Hysteresis: Mechanisms, Clinical Implications, and Management

Speciality: Ophthalmology

Speaker:

Goka Swetha | HCP

Description:

Welcome to our podcast on age-associated changes in corneal biomechanical hysteresis. As we age, the cornea—the clear front surface of the eye—experiences a reduction in biomechanical hysteresis, which means it becomes less able to absorb and dissipate pressure. This decline is linked to changes in collagen structure and hydration within the cornea. Clinically, lower hysteresis values are associated with a higher risk of glaucoma progression and may affect the accuracy of intraocular pressure measurements. Management strategies include regular eye examinations, using advanced tonometry devices, and early intervention for at-risk individuals. Understanding these age-related changes helps ophthalmologists offer better care and tailor treatment for elderly patients.
