Understanding medical ventilation in critical care

Speciality: Critical Care

Speaker:

Dr. J MUKUND | Consultant Intensivist

Description:

Welcome to our podcast. Today, we’re exploring medical ventilation in critical care. Mechanical ventilation is a life-saving intervention used when patients are unable to breathe adequately on their own, often due to serious illness or injury. In intensive care units, ventilators deliver oxygen and remove carbon dioxide by moving air in and out of the lungs. Settings such as oxygen concentration, pressure, and breath rate are carefully adjusted by healthcare professionals to match individual patient needs. While ventilation supports vital functions, it also comes with risks, including infection and lung injury. That’s why patients on ventilators are closely monitored. Understanding how ventilation works helps us appreciate the complexity and importance of critical care medicine.
