What happens in an intensive care unit (ICU)?

Speciality: Critical Care

Speaker:

Dr. ANIRBAN BHATTACHARYYA | Consultant Intensivist

Description:

Welcome to our podcast. Today, we're exploring what happens inside an intensive care unit, or ICU. The ICU is a specialised hospital area for patients who are critically ill and need constant, close monitoring. In the ICU, healthcare professionals use advanced equipment to track vital signs and provide life-support treatments, like ventilators for breathing or medication to support heart function. Nurses and doctors work around the clock, adjusting care as needed and responding quickly to any changes. Family members can usually visit, but visiting hours may be limited to allow for patient rest and medical procedures. The goal in the ICU is to stabilise patients and help them recover enough to move to a less intensive area of the hospital.
