Understanding medical ventilation in critical care

Speciality: Critical Care

Speaker:

Dr. J MUKUND | ConsultantIntensivist

Description:

Welcome to today's episode, where we explore medical ventilation in critical care. Mechanical ventilation is a life-saving intervention for patients who cannot breathe adequately on their own. It works by delivering oxygen and removing carbon dioxide through a machine called a ventilator. This support is crucial in conditions like severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, or during major surgeries. Ventilators can be set to assist with each breath or take over the entire breathing process, depending on the patient’s needs. Careful monitoring ensures the right balance of oxygen and pressure, minimising complications. Understanding how ventilation supports recovery highlights the importance of skilled critical care teams.
