Speciality: Neurology
Description:
A warm welcome to all the medical professionals in this interesting session on Clinical manifestations and diagnosis of Neurocysticercosis.
Neurocysticercosis is a parasitic infection of the central nervous system caused by the larval stage of the pork tapeworm, Taenia sodium. The clinical manifestations vary widely depending on the number, size, and location of cysts in the brain, as well as the host's immune response. Common symptoms include seizures, which are the most frequent clinical presentation, headaches, and focal neurological deficits. Other manifestations can include hydrocephalus, meningitis, cognitive decline, and psychiatric disturbances.
Diagnosis of neurocysticercosis involves a combination of clinical evaluation, neuroimaging, and serological tests. Neuroimaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are crucial, often revealing characteristic cystic lesions with or without scolex, calcifications, and signs of inflammation. Serological tests, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and enzyme-linked immuno electrotransfer blot (EITB), help detect specific antibodies or antigens and support the diagnosis. Lumbar puncture and cerebrospinal fluid analysis may be used in cases of suspected meningitis or intracranial hypertension. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential for effective management and improving patient outcomes.
Therefore, get an overall knowledge of clinical manifestations and diagnosis of Neurocysticercosis.
