Age-Related Changes in Synaptic Vesicle Recycling Efficiency

Speciality: Neurology

Speaker:

Description:

Welcome to our podcast. Today, let's explore how ageing influences synaptic vesicle recycling efficiency in the brain. Synaptic vesicles are small sacs in nerve cells that store neurotransmitters, releasing them to transmit signals between neurons. As we age, research shows that the ability of neurons to recycle these vesicles declines. This reduced efficiency can slow down communication between brain cells, potentially impacting memory, learning, and overall cognitive function. Scientists are studying the underlying causes, such as changes in protein function and cellular energy supply, to better understand age-related cognitive decline. By uncovering these mechanisms, we hope to find ways to support healthy brain ageing and maintain cognitive abilities for longer.
