A person's susceptibility to papillary thyroid cancer may be determined by variations in telomere lengthening genes.

Scientists at Johns Hopkins Medicine have discovered that up to 4.5 percent of papillary nevi may be explained by particular variations in three genes linked to maintaining the length of telomeres, the protective DNA endcaps on chromosomes.
