Researchers have found that rare earth metal nanoparticles used in MRI contrast agents can penetrate tissue.

Doctors routinely prescribe drugs containing gadolinium to improve MRI scans, but there is evidence that nanoparticles of the rare-earth metal enter kidney cells, sometimes causing serious side effects.
