Empirical research on animals confirms the effectiveness of a novel vaccine against a deadly tropical disease and possible bioterrorism weapon.

Researchers at UCLA tested a vaccine against the bacterium that causes melioidosis in mice and discovered that it was very protective against the illness. Melioidosis is endemic in many tropical areas and affects about 165,000 people annually.
