Understanding Platelet Disorders

Speciality: Hematology

Speaker:

Dr. Gauri Shankar Sharma | Consultant Hematologist

Description:

Welcome to our podcast, where today we're exploring platelet disorders. Platelets are tiny blood cells that help your body form clots to stop bleeding. When you have a platelet disorder, it means there’s either too many or too few platelets, or they don’t work properly. This can lead to problems with bleeding or, in some cases, unwanted clotting. Common platelet disorders include thrombocytopenia, where platelet counts are low, and thrombocytosis, where they are high. Symptoms might include easy bruising, frequent nosebleeds, or prolonged bleeding from minor cuts. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are key to managing these conditions. If you notice unusual bleeding or bruising, it’s important to speak with your healthcare provider.
