Screening for Early Macular Dysfunction Through Dark Adaptation Kinetics

Speciality: Ophthalmology

Description:

Today, we’re exploring the importance of screening for early macular dysfunction using dark adaptation kinetics. The macula, located at the center of the retina, is vital for sharp and detailed vision. Early dysfunction in this area can go unnoticed until significant vision loss occurs. By measuring how quickly our eyes adapt from bright light to darkness—a process called dark adaptation—clinicians can detect subtle changes in macular function before symptoms become apparent. Early detection allows for timely intervention and better management of conditions like age-related macular degeneration. Incorporating dark adaptation testing into routine eye exams may help preserve vision and improve long-term outcomes for at-risk individuals.
