With the continuous evolution of medical science, the approach towards hepatitis management has witnessed significant advancements. Recent years have seen the advent of Direct-Acting Antivirals (DAAs) which have revolutionized hepatitis C treatment. DAAs target specific steps in the HCV life cycle, blocking viral replication. The efficacy of these treatments, with cure rates of over 95%, has transformed hepatitis C from a chronic, life-threatening disease into a curable condition.
Advancements in diagnostic techniques, such as the introduction of the HCV RNA PCR test, have improved the accuracy of hepatitis C diagnosis. This test not only detects the presence of the virus but also quantifies the viral load, providing crucial information about the disease progression and response to treatment.
While there is no vaccine for hepatitis C, the development and widespread use of vaccines for hepatitis A and B have significantly reduced the incidence of these diseases. Furthermore, preventive measures, including the promotion of safe injection practices and screening of blood products, have also contributed to a decline in hepatitis transmission rates.
