Management depends on the underlying cause. It may range from lifestyle modifications in cases of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease to antiviral therapy for chronic hepatitis B or C. In all cases, patients should be advised to avoid alcohol and any potential hepatotoxic medications.
In conclusion, a systematic approach to the evaluation of elevated liver enzymes can facilitate accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. Understanding the potential causes and knowing when to refer are key skills for primary care physicians dealing with this common clinical problem.
