Speciality: Anesthesia
Description:
Today, let’s explore the basics of spinal and epidural anaesthesia. Both techniques are commonly used to provide pain relief during surgery or childbirth, but they work in slightly different ways. Spinal anaesthesia involves a single injection into the fluid surrounding your spinal cord, resulting in rapid numbness that lasts for a few hours. Epidural anaesthesia, on the other hand, is delivered through a small catheter placed just outside the spinal cord membrane. This allows for continuous or adjustable pain relief, often used during labour. While both are generally safe, each has its own benefits and potential risks. Understanding these differences can help you and your healthcare team make informed choices about pain management.
