How to prepare for surgery: An anesthesiologist's guide

Speciality: Anesthesia

Speaker:

Dr. SUNIL KUMAR | Consultant Anesthesiologist

Description:

Preparing for surgery can feel overwhelming, but a few simple steps can make a big difference. As an anaesthesiologist, I recommend starting by sharing your full medical history and a list of medications with your healthcare team. It’s important to follow fasting instructions—usually no food or drink for at least six hours before surgery. Avoid alcohol and smoking, as these can impact your recovery. Arrange for someone to take you home afterwards, since you won’t be able to drive. Finally, ask your anaesthesiologist any questions you have about the procedure or anaesthesia. Good preparation helps reduce risks and ease anxiety, setting you up for a safe and smooth surgical experience.
