Microstructural Changes in the Aging Vocal Fold Lamina Propria

Speciality: ENT

Description:

Today, let’s explore how aging affects the vocal fold lamina propria at the microstructural level. As we get older, the lamina propria—the flexible layer within our vocal folds—undergoes significant changes. There’s a decrease in elastin and collagen fibers, leading to reduced elasticity and increased stiffness. These changes can impact voice quality, making it sound weaker or more breathy. The balance of extracellular matrix components, like hyaluronic acid, also shifts, affecting the tissue’s ability to vibrate efficiently. Understanding these microstructural alterations is crucial for developing targeted therapies and vocal training strategies to maintain healthy voice function as we age.
