How BMI Affects Your Overall Health

Speciality: Bariatrics

Speaker:

Dr. KATHIRVELU RAMARAJ | Consultant Bariatric Surgeon

Description:

Body Mass Index, or BMI, is a simple calculation using your height and weight to estimate body fat. While it doesn’t measure fat directly, it gives a useful indication of whether you’re in a healthy range. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal, while values outside this range can signal potential health risks. For example, a high BMI is linked to increased chances of heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. On the other hand, a low BMI may suggest malnutrition or other underlying issues. Remember, BMI is just one tool—other factors like muscle mass, age, and genetics also play a role. Always consult a healthcare professional for a complete picture of your health.
