When Is a Fever a Medical Emergency?

Speciality: Fever

Speaker:

Dr. SANJAY VIJAY BHARATI | General Physician

Description:

Welcome to our podcast. Fever is a common symptom, often signalling infection. But when does it require urgent medical attention? A fever becomes a medical emergency if it’s above 40 degrees Celsius, or 104 degrees Fahrenheit, or if it’s accompanied by symptoms like difficulty breathing, chest pain, persistent vomiting, confusion, seizures, or a rash that doesn’t fade when pressed. In young children, infants under three months with any fever should be seen by a doctor promptly. If you have a weakened immune system or serious underlying health conditions, don’t wait—seek advice early. Remember, while most fevers can be managed at home, these warning signs mean it’s time to get professional help. Stay informed, and take care.
