Description:
A warm welcome to all the medical professionals in this interesting session on Understanding Type 2 Diabetes - Latest Guidelines.
The latest guidelines for understanding and managing Type 2 diabetes emphasize early diagnosis and regular screening, especially for high-risk populations. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends using HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), or an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) for diagnosing diabetes. Individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher (23 or higher in Asian Americans) and additional risk factors such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, or a family history of diabetes should be screened regularly. Early detection is crucial for initiating timely interventions to prevent complications
Current guidelines advocate for a personalized approach to managing Type 2 diabetes, focusing on lifestyle modifications as the first line of treatment. This includes dietary changes, increased physical activity, and weight loss. Pharmacologic interventions are tailored based on individual patient profiles, with metformin remaining the preferred initial medication. The addition of other agents, such as SGLT2 inhibitors or GLP-1 receptor agonists, may be considered based on the patient's cardiovascular health, risk of hypoglycemia, and other comorbidities. The goal is to achieve and maintain target blood glucose levels, minimizing the risk of both acute and chronic complications
Therefore, get an overall knowledge of understanding type 2 diabetes - latest guidelines.
