Appendicitis is a medical condition in which the appendix, a small organ attached to the large intestine, becomes inflamed and swollen. This can lead to severe abdominal pain in the lower right area, nausea, vomiting, and fever. If left untreated, it can result in life-threatening complications such as rupture of the appendix and sepsis. Appendicitis typically requires surgical removal of the affected organ (appendectomy). It is unclear why some people develop appendicitis while others do not but it is believed that blockages or infections may play a role. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing complications and ensuring a speedy recovery from this potentially serious illness.
