Diabetes is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease destroying pancreatic beta cells, while Type 2 involves insulin resistance and progressive beta cell failure. Recognizing these pathophysiological differences is critical in tailoring treatment strategies.
Diabetes presents with polyuria, polydipsia, and unexplained weight loss. However, these classic symptoms may not always be present, especially in Type 2 diabetes. Early detection of silent symptoms like fatigue, recurrent infections, and slow wound healing can prevent complications.
Management of diabetes involves lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy, and regular monitoring. Lifestyle modifications include diet, physical activity, and weight management. Pharmacotherapy involves insulin for Type 1 diabetes and oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin for Type 2. Long-term complications of diabetes include microvascular (retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy) and macrovascular (coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, and stroke) diseases. Regular screening and early intervention can prevent or delay these complications.
Mastering the multifaceted approach to diabetes management requires a thorough understanding of the disease's pathophysiology, recognition of its clinical manifestations, implementation of effective management strategies, and proactive addressing of potential complications. By adopting this comprehensive approach, healthcare professionals can significantly improve the quality of life of diabetic patients.
