The evolution of cancer treatment has been remarkable, with targeted therapy emerging as a promising approach. This approach is designed to exploit specific genetic or molecular alterations that drive tumor growth.
Targeted therapies, unlike traditional cytotoxic chemotherapies, work by interrupting specific molecules necessary for tumor growth and progression. They have transformed the treatment of several cancers, including lung, breast, and colorectal cancers. Furthermore, advancements in genomic sequencing have facilitated the identification of actionable mutations, leading to the development of more effective targeted therapies.
Despite the progress, challenges persist. The heterogeneity of tumors, development of resistance, and adverse effects limit the effectiveness of targeted therapies. However, ongoing research is focused on overcoming these hurdles by developing combination therapies and predictive biomarkers.
Targeted therapy has ushered in a new era in oncology, offering a more personalized and effective approach to cancer treatment. Although challenges remain, the future of targeted therapy is promising, with continuous advancements anticipated to revolutionize cancer treatment further.
