Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with multifaceted aspects that requires a comprehensive understanding for effective management.
PD is primarily characterized by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. The exact etiology remains unclear, however, genetic predispositions, environmental factors, and aging are considered key contributors.
PD manifests with motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rigidity, and tremors. Non-motor symptoms including cognitive impairment, mood disorders, and autonomic dysfunction are also prevalent.
Diagnosis relies on clinical criteria, with neuroimaging serving as a supportive tool. Management involves pharmacological interventions, primarily levodopa, and non-pharmacological strategies.
PD is a progressive disease with varying prognoses. Research is ongoing to develop more effective treatments and ultimately, a cure.
Understanding the multifaceted aspects of PD is crucial for its diagnosis and management. Continuous research is required to further elucidate the pathogenesis and develop more effective therapeutic strategies.
