However, their variable sensitivity and specificity necessitate cautious interpretation. Molecular diagnostic methods, such as PCR, show promise with high sensitivity and specificity, but require further validation.

Antimicrobial resistance complicates treatment. Fluoroquinolones, previously first-line, are now less effective due to widespread resistance. Current WHO guidelines recommend empirical treatment with ceftriaxone or azithromycin. Vaccination, though not 100% effective, remains an important preventive measure, especially in endemic areas.
