Obesity, a global epidemic with profound health and socioeconomic repercussions, necessitates effective and enduring management strategies. While bariatric surgery, pharmacotherapy, and intensive lifestyle interventions achieve significant short-term weight loss, the challenge often lies in maintaining these gains over time. Clinicians are increasingly recognizing the necessity of structured long-term follow-up and personalized lifestyle optimization to ensure sustainable benefits. This article critically evaluates the available evidence regarding sustainable lifestyle success following weight-loss interventions, with a focus on mechanisms, clinical features, and evidence-based management approaches.
Obesity affects over 650 million adults worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. The prevalence is rising in both developed and developing countries, driving an associated surge in comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain malignancies. The economic burden is substantial, with direct healthcare costs and indirect losses attributable to reduced productivity and increased morbidity. Despite the high efficacy of initial weight-loss interventions, studies reveal that up to 80% of individuals gradually regain lost weight within five years, underscoring the need for strategies that promote sustainable lifestyle change.
