Stomach cancer is one of the most deadly forms of cancer, but it can be difficult to detect early on. It is often referred to as the “silent killer” because its symptoms are often overlooked or ignored until it is too late. Unfortunately, stomach cancer is often diagnosed in its later stages when the prognosis is not good. This is why it is important for doctors to be aware of the silent signs of stomach cancer and to be able to recognize them early. Early detection is critical in order to give patients the best possible chance of survival.
Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is a type of cancer that begins in the cells that line the stomach. It is the fourth most common type of cancer worldwide and is more common in men than women. The exact cause of stomach cancer is unknown, but certain risk factors such as a family history of the disease, smoking, or a diet high in processed meats have been linked to an increased risk.
Stomach cancer is often referred to as the “silent killer” because its symptoms are often subtle and can easily be overlooked or mistaken for other conditions. It is important for doctors to be aware of the signs and symptoms of stomach cancer so that they can diagnose it early and give patients the best chance of survival. The most common symptom of stomach cancer is abdominal pain. This can range from a dull ache to a sharp, stabbing pain. Other symptoms include: • Unexplained weight loss • Loss of appetite • Nausea and vomiting • Bloating • Heartburn • Difficulty swallowing • Blood in the stool • Anemia • Fatigue It is important to note that these symptoms can also be caused by other conditions, so it is important to talk to your doctor if you experience any of them.
If a doctor suspects that a patient may have stomach cancer, they will order a variety of tests including a physical exam, blood tests, imaging tests, and a biopsy. A biopsy is the only way to definitively diagnose stomach cancer. The treatment for stomach cancer will depend on the stage of the cancer and the patient’s overall health. Treatment usually involves surgery to remove the cancerous tumor, followed by chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.
Stomach cancer is a deadly form of cancer, but early detection can give patients the best chance of survival. It is important for doctors to be aware of the silent signs of stomach cancer so that they can diagnose it early. If you experience any of the symptoms listed above, talk to your doctor immediately. With early detection and proper treatment, stomach cancer can be effectively treated.
