The preservation of oral function encompasses the maintenance of teeth, periodontium, mucosa, salivary glands, and neuromuscular coordination, all of which are susceptible to age-related and disease-induced decline. With increasing life expectancy and the prevalence of chronic diseases, healthcare professionals must adopt a proactive, evidence-based approach to prevent and manage oral functional impairment. This article provides a comprehensive review of current concepts and practical strategies for the preservation of oral function across the lifespan, focusing on clinical relevance and guideline-based management.
Oral diseases remain among the most prevalent chronic conditions worldwide. Key recommendations include regular risk assessment, personalized prevention plans, early intervention for caries and periodontal disease, minimally invasive restorative care, and patient education. Multidisciplinary management, integration of oral and general health care, and addressing social determinants of health are highlighted as essential components. Adherence to these guidelines optimizes outcomes and reduces the burden of oral morbidity across populations.
