Description:

A warm welcome to all the medical professionals in this interesting session on Ankylosing Spondylitis: What is it?
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease primarily affecting the spine and sacroiliac joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Over time, AS can cause the vertebrae in the spine to fuse, resulting in a loss of flexibility and a hunched-forward posture. The disease often begins in early adulthood, and its hallmark symptom is persistent lower back pain that improves with movement but worsens with rest.
AS is considered an autoimmune disorder, with a strong genetic link, particularly with the HLA-B27 gene. In addition to affecting the spine, AS can cause inflammation in other areas such as the hips, shoulders, and even organs like the eyes (uveitis). Early diagnosis is critical to managing AS, as treatment focuses on reducing pain and inflammation, preventing or delaying spinal fusion, and maintaining posture. Treatment options include NSAIDs, physical therapy, and biologics, such as TNF inhibitors, to control inflammation and preserve mobility.
Therefore, get an overall knowledge of ankylosing spondylitis: what is it?
