Description:

A warm welcome to all the medical professionals in this interesting session on Rheumatoid Arthritis : At a Glance
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the joints, causing pain, swelling, stiffness, and eventually leading to joint deformity and disability if left untreated. Unlike osteoarthritis, which is caused by wear and tear, RA is driven by an immune system attack on the synovial membrane, leading to inflammation and joint damage. RA can also affect other systems in the body, including the lungs, heart, and eyes, making it a systemic condition that requires comprehensive management.
The management of RA has advanced significantly with the introduction of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and biologic agents. Methotrexate remains the cornerstone of RA treatment, often used in combination with other DMARDs or biologics like TNF inhibitors or JAK inhibitors for more aggressive disease. Early and aggressive treatment is key to controlling inflammation, preventing joint damage, and maintaining quality of life. Alongside medication, lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and smoking cessation are important for managing RA and reducing the risk of complications. Regular monitoring by a rheumatologist is essential to adjust treatment plans and ensure optimal disease control.
