Predicting Delayed Hemolytic Transfusion Reactions Through Donor-Recipient Antigen Exposure Modeling

Speciality: Hematology

Description:

Welcome to today’s episode. We’re exploring how AI is transforming blood transfusion safety, specifically by predicting delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions, or DHTRs. These reactions happen when a patient’s immune system attacks transfused red blood cells days or weeks after a transfusion. Using donor-recipient antigen exposure modeling, AI can analyze detailed blood group data from both donor and recipient. By identifying mismatches in minor blood group antigens, the model predicts the risk of DHTRs before transfusion occurs. This proactive approach helps physicians select the best-matched blood, reducing complications and improving patient care. As this technology advances, we can expect safer transfusions and better outcomes for patients worldwide.
