Description:
A warm welcome to all the medical professionals in this interesting session on Allergic Asthma : An Overview
Allergic asthma is a common form of asthma triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and mold. In individuals with allergic asthma, exposure to these allergens causes the immune system to overreact, leading to inflammation and constriction of the airways. This results in typical asthma symptoms like wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. Allergic asthma often begins in childhood and is associated with other allergic conditions, such as allergic rhinitis or eczema.
Management of allergic asthma focuses on controlling both asthma symptoms and reducing exposure to allergens. Inhaled corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatment, helping to reduce airway inflammation and prevent asthma attacks. Long-acting beta-agonists (LABAs) and leukotriene modifiers may also be used in combination with inhaled steroids for better control. For severe cases, biologic therapies like anti-IgE (omalizumab) or IL-5 inhibitors can be effective in targeting specific immune pathways involved in the allergic response. Environmental control measures, such as using air purifiers, encasing bedding in allergen-proof covers, and avoiding known triggers, are also critical components of managing allergic asthma. Regular monitoring and a personalized asthma action plan are essential for maintaining control and preventing exacerbations.
