Preventing Postoperative Voice Dysfunction Through Intraoperative Laryngeal Electromyographic Monitoring

Speciality: ENT

Description:

Welcome to our podcast. Today, we discuss how intraoperative laryngeal electromyographic, or EMG, monitoring is transforming surgical outcomes for patients at risk of postoperative voice dysfunction. During surgeries near the vocal cords, like thyroid or neck procedures, the risk of nerve injury can be significant. EMG monitoring tracks the electrical activity of laryngeal muscles in real time, alerting surgeons to any nerve irritation or damage as it happens. This immediate feedback allows for quick adjustments, helping to preserve nerve function and maintain the patient’s natural voice. By integrating EMG monitoring, surgical teams can greatly reduce the incidence of voice changes after surgery, leading to better patient recovery and satisfaction.
