Description:
A warm welcome to all the medical professionals in this interesting session on understanding the concept and management of Sleep Apnea.
Sleep apnea is a prevalent sleep disorder characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. These pauses in breathing, known as apneas, can occur multiple times per hour and may lead to fragmented sleep patterns and inadequate oxygenation of the body. There are two main types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), where the airway becomes blocked or collapses during sleep, and central sleep apnea (CSA), where the brain fails to send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. Diagnosis typically involves a sleep study, during which the frequency and severity of apneas are measured.
Management of sleep apnea often involves a combination of lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, avoiding alcohol and sedatives before bedtime, and sleeping on one's side rather than the back. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is a common treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, involving the use of a machine that delivers a steady flow of air through a mask worn over the nose or mouth during sleep, keeping the airway open. Other treatment options may include oral appliances to reposition the jaw and tongue, surgery to remove excess tissue blocking the airway, or medications to stimulate breathing in cases of central sleep apnea. Effective management of sleep apnea is essential to improve sleep quality, reduce daytime fatigue, and lower the risk of associated health complications such as<
