Assessing Hypocalcemia Risk After Thyroid Surgery Through Parathyroid Perfusion and Functional Reserve Mapping

Speciality: Endocrinology

Speaker:

Garima Hind | HCP

Description:

Welcome to our medical insights podcast. Today, we discuss how assessing hypocalcemia risk after thyroid surgery can be improved by evaluating parathyroid perfusion and functional reserve mapping. During thyroidectomy, the parathyroid glands may be damaged or their blood supply compromised, leading to low calcium levels, or hypocalcemia. By using advanced imaging and mapping techniques, surgeons can assess the blood flow to the parathyroid glands in real time and estimate their functional reserve. This helps in predicting which patients are at higher risk for hypocalcemia, allowing for timely intervention and better postoperative care. Ultimately, these methods support safer surgeries and improved patient outcomes.
