Turner syndrome is a growth deficit condition that affects only females. It occurs when one of the X chromosomes (sex chromosomes) is missing or partially missing in females. Turner syndrome can cause a variety of medical and developmental problems, including short height, failure of the ovaries to develop and heart defects.

As it is a chromosomal condition Turner syndrome can affect development in females. The most common feature observed in Turner syndrome is short stature, which becomes evident by about age 5. An early loss of ovarian function (ovarian hypofunction or premature ovarian failure) is most commonly seen.
