Description:
A warm welcome to all the medical professionals in this interesting session on Understanding Urticaria
Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a skin condition characterized by the sudden appearance of red, itchy welts or raised areas on the skin. These welts can vary in size and may appear on any part of the body, often changing location or shape within a few hours. Urticaria is typically triggered by allergic reactions to substances like food, medications, insect stings, or even environmental factors like heat, cold, or stress.
There are two main types of urticaria: acute and chronic. Acute urticaria lasts for less than six weeks and is usually linked to a clear allergen. Chronic urticaria, on the other hand, persists for six weeks or more and often has no identifiable cause. Treatment usually involves antihistamines to reduce itching and swelling, though more severe cases may require corticosteroids or immunosuppressants. Identifying and avoiding triggers, when possible, is key to preventing flare-ups and managing the condition effectively.
